In 2019 we continued to focus on the poorest performers. We assessed 4924 licences in 2019. Of the total number of authorisations assessed by SEPA, the percentage of those which are unsatisfactory has reduced by a small amount, from 9.6% in 2015 to 9.1% in 2019. The number of licences that were assessed as satisfactory in 2019 was 4480, 90.98% overall.

Since 2014, operators in all major regulatory regimes and water resource activities regulated under Controlled Activities Regulations have been included in the Compliance Assessment Scheme, making it easier to compare trends.

A significant number of lower risk activities are not assessed annually, and inspection frequency varies from once every two to once every five years. As a result, the number of licenses assessed and reported each year will vary. In addition to the compliance data for nuclear and radioactive substances sites published in detail below, we also regulate smaller authorised radioactive sources, many of which are used in the offshore oil industry and onshore in industrial processes.
